Securing funding for nature

About Jonathan Baker

Jonathan Baker is part of CLA’s national policy team. He advises members on issues relating to the environment and land use. A major part of his role is working with the Government and government agencies on the design and implementation of grants for environment works. This includes current grants as well as new schemes that may be created when the UK leaves the EU and Common Agricultural Policy. Within the CLA he is responsible for identifying and creating new investment opportunities for landowners who wish to manage the environmental assets they care for. Prior to joining the CLA he worked at Defra and an environmental consultancy. Jonathan is also a current Nuffield Farming Scholar.

Investing in the natural environment is increasingly a profitable choice for farmers and landowners. This seminar will look at the various options available to those who want to invest in the natural environment as a complement to their traditional or diversified farm business. It will explain how, with some creativity and know-how, farmers can access significant funding to invest in the natural environment for which they are responsible. Options include providing compensation for habitats damaged through development, natural capital accounting, grants, partnerships with charities, business differentiation and addressing climate change. The opportunities for environmental investment that might emerge as a result of Brexit will also be considered.
