Farm diversification into Food processing – exploring opportunities and avoiding pitfalls

About Arwyn Davies

Arwyn Davies has extensive experience of supporting businesses in the food industry to develop and grow. Following a period as Director of the Welsh Development Agency’s Food Directorate and 11 years in the private sector working in PR and Marketing, Arwyn has recently joined Food Centre Wales, a food innovation centre based in West Wales where he leads a team of specialists to support food companies to develop and successfully launch new products in the market place.

Food Centre Wales works in partnership with other food technology centres in Wales as part of Food Innovation Wales, a collaboration that brings together co-ordinated subsidised support for food companies to enable innovation and growth in the Welsh food sector. The centre also provides a broad range of consultancy and training services, using a range of commercial processing facilities to enable companies to develop the right product to meet changing market needs.

Arwyn also runs a farm, where he produces Great Taste award winning Welsh Black Beef, some of which he sells directly to local customers.

As farm businesses seek ways of diversifying income streams to protect future viability, food manufacturing or retailing remain popular options to explore. There are many successes, and small food companies are important drivers of innovation within the sector, but there are many issues to consider before deciding to take the plunge. This seminar covers the key steps that you need to take before launching a new business in the food sector, and where to find support to make it happen. We will look at techniques to identify the right market, understanding the regulations, addressing the technical challenges, the business model and sales and marketing.
